RICE SWELLS Part 1

My first cooking experience; shocking discovery.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." Today's master was once yesterday's servant.

I've always thought that cooking is something a girl will eventually grow to know how to do, so I didn't really know much about it. All I know is that whenever my mum enters the kitchen she comes out with something edible and mouth watering.

I thought, "When I become a big woman, I'll know how to cook like my mum."

One fateful day, my mum wanted to prepare a lunch of rice and stew for the family. Since stew is always available in the kitchen, all she had to do is to prepare rice. 

As usual, I didn't deem it fit to be in the kitchen so I was busy with my school books in the room. My mum appeared in my room suddenly and asked me to go to the kitchen to complete cooking the rice she already rinsed. "Just like that!" I said in my mind. The highest thing I've ever done in the kitchen was to boil water and pre- heat food. 

So, I found myself in the kitchen facing a derica of rinsed rice in the purple bowl on the sink. "Mummy, must be joking if she thinks that this little quantity of rice will be enough for the whole house." I used my little brain to serve the raw rice on four different plates, at the time I was done, I concluded that I will need to wash two more dericas of rice. I never knew that rice swells when cooked.

Then, I glanced at the big pot my mum chose to cook the rice. "How will she  choose this big type of pot to cook the little rice she measured." So, I took a pot that exactly contains the three derica of rice I had already rinsed. Oh! Only if someone had told me that rice swells.

Happy with how smart I was with cooking despite being my first time in the kitchen, I went back to my room to sleep. If I had a phone, I would take pictures of my first cooking just like I watch people do on the television.

A foolish person seems wise in his face.

I went back to check my rice some minutes later, lo and behold, I got a shocker. 

Why didn't someone tell me that rice swells?
